CAURI and Silver earrings

Shipping to United States: $4.86

These earrings were made by Bouba, a young jeweler from Kafountine in Casamance.
The Cauris are shells of the porcelain family.
They lend themselves to several uses. They were the currency in West Africa, especially during the great empires of Ghana, Mali and Songhai. A certain religious value led the animist priests to make costumes entirely or partly made of cursing that their mask carriers wore in ceremonial demonstrations in the sacred woods. Magical or cultural objects, horns, grey-grey, fetishes were set with currants in the healer or sorcerer. These objects and costumes covered in currants are found in Casamance among the Diola and in Eastern Senegal among the Bassari, where the traditional religion is still perennial.

Symbolically, the cursia are frequently put in relation to the feminine. Because their shape is associated with that of the female sex, cured can be used during fertility rites.
